Georg Friedrich Händel Te Deum for the victory of Dettingen

Dettingen Te Deum HWV 283, 1743

Read and write feedback

In keeping with the triumphal occasion of this work, Handel often writes for the choir in five parts (using a divided soprano part) and in a homophonic manner. The choir’s blocklike interjections are festive and impressive; it is important that the choir knows the small orchestral interludes well in order to enter properly. The cantabile movements, such as No. 3, are particularly difficult: the leaps in this demanding choral soprano section are easier to grasp if one can hear the harmonic relationship while practicing. The same thing holds true for No. 5.

The underlying recording was made using a historical tuning. It sounds approximately a semitone lower than our modern piano tuning.

  • Abridged foreword of the Edition Carus 55.283

    Benedikt Poensgen
    Translation: Elizabeth Robinson

On 27 June 1743, the British King George II personally led an army of British, Hanoverians and Austrians who besieged the French at Dettingen am Main during the Austrian War of Succession. It was the last time in history that a British king himself led troops into battle. The news of the victory at Dettingen was enthusiastically received in England.2 As a result, George Frideric Handel, composer at the English court from 1723, began work on a specially ceremonial Te Deum on 17 July 1743 which he probably completed at the end of July. When George II finally returned to England in November 1743, a triumphant reception was prepared for him, the like of which had not taken place since his coronation. The work, henceforth known as the “Dettingen Te Deum,” was performed on the morning of 27 November 1743 in the presence of the King during the Sunday service in the Chapel of St. James’s Palace in London.

The Te Deum was performed with large forces. Handel probably played and conducted from the autograph score. In it, he noted the names of some of the singers and named the two bass soloists, “Mr.

    Benedikt Poensgen

  • George Frideric Handel put his exceptionally versatile compositional abilities to the test at an early age. After moving to London in 1712, where he was appointed Composer of Musick for His Majesty’s Chapel Royal in 1723, he wrote numerous masterpieces for the royal court as well as his major opere serie. For many years he enjoyed triumphant successes with his operas, which were sung by outstanding performers, with serenades, and later also with oratorios such as Saul and Israel in Egypt. Over the years Handel’s reputation grew far beyond the city where he worked; some of his choral works, particularly Messiah, have enjoyed a performance tradition which remains unbroken to this day, and are sung by choirs throughout the world.
