Die Missa a-Moll lässt die Charakteristika des von Eberlin ausgeprägten Typus der Missa brevis klar erkennen. Die Besetzung ist reduziert auf Soli, vierstimmigen Chor und das Salzburger Kirchentrio mit zwei Violinen und Basso continuo. Als Spezifikum der Aufführungspraxis im Salzburger Dom treten noch drei Posaunen hinzu, die in den chorischen Teilen mit Alt, Tenor und Bass colla parte spielen und in den Solopassagen pausieren. Dem Orchester kommt eine untergeordnete Funktion in der Begleitung der Vokalstimmen zu. Die Gestaltung des Textes erfolgt in den wortreichen Teilen des Ordinariums im Wechsel zwischen kurzen Soli- und Tutti-Abschnitten, wobei einen syllabische Textbehandlung überwiegt. Der von Eberlin ausgeprägte Typus der Missa brevis gab W. A. Mozart das Vorbild für die formale Gestaltung seiner Messen dieses Gattungsbereiches.

  • Armin Kircher studied church music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Until his death he was Director of the Church Music Department of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, and since 1992 he had been administrative director of the Österreichische Werkwoche für Kirchenmusik (Austrian Week for Church Music). He was also Director of Music at St Peter's Abbey, Salzburg and organist at the Cajetan Church in Salzburg. The collections he edited for the Catholic liturgy have become established standard works, in particular the choral collections Chorbuch Mozart • Haydn, the Chorbuch Kirchenjahr (Choirbook for the Church Year) and publications for organ and choir for the new Catholic hymnbook Gotteslob.
