This motet for double choir, based on the well-known Christmas text of Isaiah 9, 5-6, is a sample from the motets by Johann Ludwig Bach, Kappellmeister of Meiningen, which are available from Carus as a complete edition. After a more homophonic first part with many dialogs, the second part follows with an alla breve fugue that expands to a double fugue to close out the work.

| 1677-1731The Meiningen Court Kapellmeister Johann Ludwig Bach (1677–1731) belonged to a branch of the family which had split away from the principal Wechmar line during the 16th century. His surviving œuvre is not very extensive. Apart from a collection af 18 cantatas which were preserved by his Leipzig cousin J.S. Bach, there are a few further cantatas and cantata fragments, a Mass, a large-scale piece of funeral music, an orchestral overture (his only extant orchestral work) and some motets for six to ten voices. (sl) Wenn man einen entsprechend großen Chor hat, der die Doppelchörigkeit erlaubt, der aber hinsichtlich des Schwierigkeitsgrades schnell an Grenzen stößt, und wenn man hierfür ein repräsentatives, eindrucksvolles Stück für ein Weihnachtsprogramm sucht, dann liegt man mit dieser Motette genau richtig. Sie ist sowohl a cappella als auch mit Generalbass (Stimme separat erhältlich) aufführbar.

Diese Motette nach Jes 9, 5-6 eines Bachs der Meininger Linie lebt ganz von der räumlichen Wirkung des doppelchörigen Singens, wie es etwa an San Marco gepflegt wurde. Da Bach auf rhythmische Komplexität verzichtet und eine polyphone Ausarbeitung des Satzes auf die Schlussfuge beschränkt, ist eine räumlich entfernte Aufstellung der Chöre durchaus denkbar. Obwohl es in der vorliegenden Ausgabe keine Hinweise auf das Mitwirken von Instrumenten gibt, ist dieses doch durchaus möglich, da zur Entstehungszeit verbreitet. Eine Generalbassstimme zu dieser Motette ist beim Verlag gesondert erhältlich. Wegen seiner guten Klangwirkung und relativ leichten Ausführbarkeit eine Empfehlung für Ensembles, die doppelchörig singen können. (Dauer: ca. 8 min.)
