In addition to the Mass in B minor, Bach is known to have composed four other, smaller masses, the so-called Lutheran or Kyrie-Gloria masses. Despite their musical excellence, they are often overshadowed by Bach's other church compositions. The shorter structure comprising just six movements (up to Cum sancto spiritu) had a specific liturgical role in church services of Bach's time. These masses consist largely of so-called parodies, with Bach taking most of the original music from his cantatas and reworking it in his usual fashion – in some cases quite considerably – to suit the context of the new piece. Ulrich Leisinger has prepared new critical editions of these four works for Carus.
