Cantata for the 6th Sunday after Trinity BWV 170, 1726
Die Kantate Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust für Alt solo hat Bach zum 6. Sonntag nach Trinitatis 1728 komponiert. Sie entstammt damit seinem dritten Leipziger Kantatenjahrgang, in dem er in zahlreichen individuellen Lösungen nach neue Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten trachtete. Ihr unverwechselbares Kolorit erhält diese Kantate durch ihre ungewöhnliche Instrumentation. Während die Solostimme in der ersten Arie, von Streichern und Oboe d'amore begleitet wird, steht ihr in der zweiten eine zwei Manuale virtuos nutzende Orgel zur Seite, gestützt allein durch ein "Bassettchen" der hohen Streicher; die im Text beklagte Gottesferne zeigt sich hier im Fehlen eines Basses. In der dritten Arie hat Bach die Besetzung des ersten Satzes wieder aufgegriffen, aber um ein zusätzliches Soloinstrument erweitert. Allerdings musste dies offenbar noch vor der ersten Aufführung durch die obligate Orgel ersetzt werden. Erst für eine späte Wiederaufführung griff Bach auf seinen ursprünglichen Plan zurück und wies die Partie einer Traversflöte zu. Die vorliegende Edition bietet beide Varianten.

and from the depths will “vengeance” cry.
O righteous God, how distant
now is mankind from your presence;
you love, yet men, with threats
and curses filled with hate...

| 1922-2016Paul Horn war ein deutscher Kirchenmusiker, Organist, Komponist und Musikwissenschaftler. Er studierte Kirchenmusik und Orgel an der Evangelischen Kirchenmusikschule Esslingen am Neckar bei Hans-Arnold Metzger und Musikwissenschaft, Theologie und Geschichte an der Universität Tübingen. Seine berufliche Laufbahn begann als Kantor an der Evangelischen Michaelskirche in Stuttgart-Degerloch. 1954 wurde er Kantor an der Evangelischen Stadtkirche Ravensburg, eine Position, die er bis zu seiner Pensionierung innehatte. Als Musikwissenschaftler arbeitete Horn bis ins hohe Alter eng mit Carus zusammen. So stammen zahlreiche Carus-Klavierauszüge aus seiner Feder. Personal details
