Johannes H. E. Koch studierte in Leipzig Kirchenmusik, später Komposition an der Musikakademie in Detmold. In Herford unterrichtete er bis 1988 Tonsatz und Komposition. Außerdem war er dort 25 Jahre lang Kantor und Bläserchorleiter an der Stiftberger St. Marien-Kirche.
Er komponierte in zahlreichen Gattungen, sowohl im instrumentalen, als auch im vokalen Bereich. Ein wichtiger Teil seines Schaffens waren Werke für Posaunenchöre.
