Das ist die Geschichte einer Nanny, die mit einem Wiegenlied ein Kind in den Schlaf singen soll. Das Kind, im französischen Lied der kleine Nicolas, möchte aber nicht schlafen. Die Nanny versucht es sanft, sie versucht es mit allerlei Gesten, mit Erzählungen von Kuchen bis Schokolade. Vergeblich. Sie wird lauter, sie ist genervt, beinahe verärgert, am Schluss fleht sie nur noch und hofft, das Kind möge einschlafen. Ein letzter Blick in die Wiege - und tatsächlich, Nicolas ist endlich eingeschlafen. Da ist sie erleichtert und lächelt.
Die Chorsänger*innen bringen diese Empfindungen beim Singen schauspielerisch zum Ausdruck. Sie reiben sich lautmalerisch den Bauch, sie schaukeln die Wiege, gelegentlich schauen sie etwas ratlos. Sie flehen, sie bitten und halten am Ende ihren Zeigefinger vor die Lippen. Happy end!
Das Werk ist vierstimmig a capella zu singen, steht im wiegenden 6/8tel Takt und steigert sich am Ende beschwörend chromatisch von G- nach As-Dur mit abwechslungsreicher Harmonik.
