Jahr für Jahr wird die Matthäus-Passion von Johann Sebastian Bach in den Kirchen und Konzerthäusern dieser Welt aufgeführt. Dieser Band der Reihe Wort//Werk//Wirkung nähert sich dem Werk von mehreren Seiten. Nach einer knappen und informativen Einleitung richtet sich der Blick zunächst auf den von Bach vertonten Text: Wie beschreibt und wie deutet er Jesu Leiden? Und wie war das gottesdienstliche ‚Setting‘ zur Zeit der Uraufführung in Leipzig? Im zweiten Teil wird mit vielen Originalzitaten aus unterschiedlichen Zeiten aufgezeigt, wie das Werk auf seine Hörer*innen gewirkt hat. Die Bandbreite reicht von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe und Friedrich Nietzsche bis hin zu Arnold Schönberg und Wolfgang Schäuble. Diese teils überraschenden Zeugnisse sind mal persönlich und emotional, von sachlich-kritisch bis künstlerisch. Dem Buch liegt die hochkarätige Einspielung der Matthäus-Passion mit Frieder Bernius und dem Kammerchor Stuttgart als mp3-CD bei.

    Ever since Carus-Verlag was founded in 1972, publishing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been a special focus for us. In the 2017 Reformation anniversary year we completed the Bach vocal project. Bach's complete sacred vocal works are now available in modern Urtext editions, together with performance material.   • Carl Friedrich Zelter, geb. 1758 in Berlin, gest. 1832 ebenda. Er erlernte zunächst den Maurerberuf, beschäftigte sich aber sehr viel mit Musik; 1791 trat er in die berühmte Berliner "Singakademie" seines Lehrers C. F.   • Rainer Maria Rilke was an important poet whose works had a profound influence on 20th-century literature. He travelled extensively throughout his life, and his experiences are reflected in his writings. His poems in particular are characterised by profound reflections on questions of love, death, art, faith and human existence. Works such as The Panther and the Sonnets to Orpheus have long been part of the standard repertoire of literary canon. Many of his poems have also been set to music.   • Fanny Hensel (1805-1847), born Mendelssohn, was one of the most talented female composers of the Romantic period and an important representative of 19th century German musical life. As the sister of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, she grew up in an artistic environment that encouraged her musical development from an early age, but also confronted her with social restrictions due to her gender. In the 1830s and 1840s in particular, Fanny Hensel composed a large number of songs, piano and choral works and - despite the reservations of her father and brother - ultimately decided to gradually publish her music. In her family home in Berlin, a centre for musicians and intellectuals, she performed many of these works, which combine romantic emotionality with tonal sophistication, as part of the so-called Sunday music. On 14 May 1847, she suffered a stroke during rehearsals for one of her popular Sunday concerts and died just a few hours later. Her impressive œuvre, which comprises more than 460 compositions, is today regarded as a significant contribution to Romantic musical culture and is attracting increasing attention in concerts and academic studies.

  • The most famous female pianist of the 19th century, Clara Schumann, née Wieck, grew up in a musical family. She was strongly encouraged by her father – perhaps a little too strongly, considering that, without any further ado, he penned his daughter’s first diary entries himself. Even as the mother of eight children and wife of Robert Schumann, she continued her impressive career as a concert pianist. Clara Schumann composed numerous piano works, songs, works for chamber ensembles and a piano concerto.

  • Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is today a dazzling figure in world literature. He was born in Frankfurt am Main and initially studied law, but then followed his inclination towards poetry. With the drama Götz von Berlechingen and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, he made important contributions to the literary movement of Sturm und Drang.
    From 1775 onwards, Goethe was employed at the court of Duke Carl August in Weimar. In addition to his work at court as a minister and director of the Weimar Court Theatre, he wrote his major works here, including the drama Faust, other novels and many poems, which are still a source of inspiration for musical adaptations today. His poems were a source of inspiration for composers, especially in the 19th century, such as Franz Schubert. Schubert alone set 52 of Goethe's works to music, the best known of which are probably the songs Gretchen am Spinnrade and Erlkönig. Goethe also became acquainted with several composers of the time. He was particularly enthusiastic about the young Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, who also set Goethe's lines to music in the ballad Die erste Walpurgisnacht (The First Walpurgis Night). ... Man kann beide Bände [auch Beethovens Missa solemnis] als Vorbereitung für den Besuch einer Aufführung heranziehen – im Sinne eines klassischen Konzertführers. Man kann sie aber auch – und das ist in Corona-Zeiten ein großes Plus – als intellektuelles Konzerterlebnis begreifen.

Wort, Werk, Wirkung – mit diesem alliterierenden Dreiklang lässt sich trefflich der Weg umschreiben, den man einschlagen muss, um klassische geistliche Musik heutzutage sinnvoll zu vermitteln. ... Insgesamt also ein überaus gelungener Beitrag ... Die Musik als solche, das sei noch angemerkt, wird übrigens platzsparend im MP3-Format auf CD geliefert.
