Bach vocal
Ever since Carus-Verlag was founded in 1972, publishing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been a special focus for us. In the 2017 Reformation anniversary year we completed the Bach vocal project. Bach's complete sacred vocal works are now available in modern Urtext editions, together with performance material. Knüpfer, Sebastian (1633 -1676): Erforsche mich, Gott
In der Reihe Vokal- u. Instrumentalmusik J.S. Bachs und der Bach-Familie legt Carus in einer mustergültigen Urtextausgabe Sebastian Knüpfers Motette „Erforsche mich, Gott” für zwei vierstimmige Chöre vor. Es handelt sich um die Vertonung des 23. und 24. Verses des Psalms 139.
Sebastian Knüpfer, Thomaskantor von 1657 -1676, komponiert diese kurze, 5-minütige Motette 1673 zum Begräbnis der Gattin des Leipziger Bürgermeisters. Die Motette ist nicht von großem Schwierigkeitsgrad und doch sehr klangschön. Bach selbst hat das Werk aufgeführt. Ein von ihm geschriebener Stimmensatz ist überliefert.
Bei der Aufführung in Bach’s Fassung sollte die Continuo-Gruppe mit Orgel und Kontrabass besetzt sein, Chor I mit Streichern, Chor II mit Holz- oder Blechbläsern. Eine nur vom Continuo begleitete Aufführung entspräche aber ebenfalls der Praxis des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts.
Die Motette ist für die Praxis zu empfehlen.
