<p>Rachmaninows erste geistliche Komposition, der sechsstimmige Canon <em>Deus meus</em>, entstand Ende 1890 im Rahmen den Kontrapunktunterrichts am Moskauer Konservatorium. Rachmaninow selbst sah dieses kleine Werk sehr skeptisch; bei seinen Lehrern am Konservatorium fand es gleichwohl Gefallen: Rachmaninow erhielt die Bestnote "5" und das Werk wurde für eine Aufführung in einem Klassenabend vorgesehen.</p>
