Thomas Gabriel
| 1957Thomas Gabriel was born in Essen, where he studied Catholic church music at the Folkwang University. After completing his A and concert exams, he worked as a regional cantor in various German dioceses. Since 1998, he has worked as a regional cantor in the diocese of Mainz for the Offenbach, Rodgau and Seligenstadt deaneries at the Einhard Basilica of St Marcellinus and St Peter in Seligenstadt. He performed extensively as an organist, harpsichordist and pianist. With his formations, the Christ Guys and the Thomas Gabriel Trio, he performs throughout Germany, abroad and in various radio and television productions. Personal details

„Alle Jahre wieder – nämlich zur Weihnachtszeit – herrscht in musikalischer Hinsicht das altbekannte Einerlei vor: Festmessen hier und da, traditionelle Gefühlsduselei statt innovativer Experimente. Dass es auch anders geht, zeigt Thomas Gabriel mit vorliegendem Band, der scheinbar Altbekanntes einmal in einem neuen Jazz- und Swing-Gewand präsentiert. Da mutiert „Vom Himmel hoch“ zum feschen Walzer oder „Stille Nacht“ zur stimmungsvollen Mood-Music. Warum nicht, ist der erste Eindruck - so macht Weihnachten wieder Spaß und die frohe Botschaft wird wieder einmal also solche erkennbar. Die Arrangements sind durchweg anspruchsvoll, aber auch so mitreißend, dass sich der Aufwand lohnt. Die Besetzung ist mit Klavier und Chor, zu dem gelegentlich ein Melodieinstrument hinzutritt, einfach gehalten, ist aber nach Belieben erweiterbar. […] Nicht zuletzt durch improvisatorische Elemente, die der Komponist ausdrücklich mit einbezieht, wird dieses Endergebnis im Einzelfall jedoch immer wieder anders aussehen. Fazit: eine dankbare Alternative zum weihnachtlichen Alltag, eben Weihnachten einmal anders.“
