Agathe Backer Grondahl pursued a very successful career as a concert pianist, but had to give it up due to illness. She then devoted herself to teaching and composing. Grondahl plays an important role in Norwegian music history, not least because of the impressionistic echoes in her music. Her list of works includes choral works as well as numerous solo songs and piano works.
