Personal details
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer who spent most of his life as a professor at Cambridge University. Alongside Edward Elgar, for example, he made a decisive contribution to the renewal of English music that took place at the end of the 19th century. His music, which is largely forgotten today, contains echoes of Irish folk music. His work includes operas, orchestral works, chamber music works and several choral and vocal works.
