Elfrida Andrée

1841 – 1929

Personal details

In 1857 Elfrida Andrée became the first woman in Sweden to pass the organ exam. Her organ symphonies are still performed today alongside various songs, choral works and chamber music. In a diary entry in the fall of 1870, she wrote: “There is a woman who thinks and feels, who writes music, not for salon flattery, but to preserve the reputation of mankind, if not sooner, then at the latest after her death.” (Quoted after: Eva Öhrström, Elfrida Andrée. Ett levnadsöd, Stockholm (Prisma) 1999, p. 124)
