Ernst Friedrich Richter, born 1808 in Großschönau (Lusatia), died 1879 in Leipzig. Studied theology in Leipzig from 1831; trained as a musician. From 1843 theory teacher in Leipzig alongside M. Hauptmann; various organist activities. After Hauptmann's death in 1868, he succeeded him as St Thomas' Cantor. His choral works were influenced by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy; his textbooks were very popular in the 19th century.
