Personal details

The French composer and pianist Louise Farrenc, who was celebrated in her day, started receiving harmony lessons at the age of 15, although she was only allowed to be taught privately as certain subjects at the conservatory were not open to women. In 1842, she was appointed professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire. Although her oeuvre is mainly comprised of orchestral works, chamber music and piano pieces, she also composed several choral works.
