Luise Adolpha Le Beau

1850 – 1927

Personal details

The German composer and pianist Luise Adolpha Le Beau wrote in her autobiography: “At that time [1859] it was considered something unheard of in Karlsruhe for a girl to play the violin!”. As an active concert pianist, she later began to integrate her own compositions into her programs. Josef Rheinberger judged her Violin Sonata op. 10 as “masculine, not as if composed by a lady” and gave her composition lessons as his only female student.
