In 1893, the Boston Symphony Orchestra premiered Margaret Ruthven Lang’s “Dramatic Overture,” which is considered to be the first orchestral work by a woman ever to have been performed by a professional US symphony orchestra. She studied violin and composition in Boston and Munich. In addition to orchestral works, Lang composed over 200 songs and several works for choir.
