Marianna von Martines was born in 1744, the daughter of a master of ceremonies for the papal nuncio in Vienna. She received piano lessons from Joseph Haydn at an early age. She established contacts with important figures in Viennese society and hosted musical soirées. She was highly regarded as a composer in her day. She wrote what is perhaps her best-known work in 1782: the oratorio Isacco figura del redentore.
