Ulrich Plenzdorf

Ulrich Plenzdorf was a German writer and screenwriter. He was born in Berlin in 1934 and is regarded as one of the most important authors of the GDR. He became best known for his work Die neuen Leiden des jungen W. (The New Trials of Young W.), in which he depicts the problems and aspirations of a young person in the GDR. Plenzdorf also wrote plays, novels and screenplays. His works are characterised by modern language and socially critical themes. He died in Berlin in 2007.
