Johann Sebastian Bach God goeth up with shouting

Cantata for Ascension BWV 43, 1726

Read and write feedback
On the 30th May 1726, as part of his third Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas, Bach directed the first performance of his Ascension Cantata "Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen". The libretto was published at Rudolstadt during the same year without any indication of the autor's name, in a collection entitled "Sonn- und Fest-Tags-Andachten über die ordenlichen Evangelia". The libretti in that collection had already been used during the Church year 1704/05 at the Court of Meiningen; their author may have been Duke Ernst Ludwig von Sachsen-Meiningen.

  • Part one 1 Coro

    God goeth up with shouting,
and the Lord with sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises, sing praise to God,
sing praises to our mighty King.

    2 Recitativo (Tenore)

Here see the victor in triumphal march returning,
fresh from the liberation of mankind he comes.
    Who shouts his praise
    with bugles, beating blaring drums?
    Who marches with his banners?
Who, but the hosts of God,
    which glory in his pow’r,
    his Kingdom and his might,
    with loud exulting voices
    they one and all unite
    in mighty Hallelujas?

    3 Aria (Tenore)

A thousand ten thousand ride after his chariot,

    ...

  • Prima Parte 1 Coro

    Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen,
und der Herr mit heller Posaune.
    Lobsinget Gott, unserm Könige.

    2 Recitativo (Tenore)

    ...

  • Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most important composers of Western music history. He came from a widely ramified musical dynasty, which produced numerous musicians and organists in the Thuringian-Saxon area.
