Composer
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
| 1710-1736Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736) is regarded as one of the most important composers of the early Italian Classical period and was active at the cusp of the late Baroque and Classical periods. Despite his short life, he left behind an influential body of work comprising both sacred and secular compositions. Particularly well-known are his Stabat Mater and the comic opera La serva padrona, which is regarded as a milestone in opera buffa.
Pergolesi’s music is characterised by clear melodic structure, expressive cantabile and a close connection between text and music. His compositions reflect the shift towards a gallant style that emphasises simplicity, naturalness and emotional immediacy. Through his innovative musical language and the lasting impact of his works, Pergolesi exerted a major influence on the development of opera and sacred music in the 18th century and inspired numerous subsequent composers.
