Missa dolorosa in e
The Missa dolorosa in e by Antonio Caldara, the second “grand old man” at the Viennese imperial court alongside Johann Joseph Fux, is a late work by the composer from 1735. The title suffix “dolorosa” was added by Caldara later and perhaps refers to the feast of the “Seven Sorrows of Mary”. Due to its cantabile and expressive style, its ease of performance, and its relatively simple instrumentation (bassoon and trombones ad libitum), the work is suitable not only for concert use but also – if one is willing to accept its duration of a good half hour –for liturgical use.
