Johann Sebastian Bach O how can I surrender Ephraim

Cantata for the 22nd Sunday after Trinity BWV 89, 1723

Read and write feedback
Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim? (What am I to make of you, Ephraim?), BWV 89, was written for the 22nd Sunday after Trinity in 1723. The plea that opens the work is delivered by solo bass rather than by the choir in a form somewhere between arioso and aria. In addition to the strings, the orchestra consists of just two oboes and one of those strange horn parts (“corne du chasse”) typical of Bach’s first months in Leipzig in which the hornist merely “fills out” the other parts. The cantata’s internal movements are rather sparsely orchestrated. The first aria, like the two recitatives, is only scored for voice and continuo; this is supplemented in the second aria by an oboe. Only in the final chorale of this chamber cantata do the full ensemble return.

  • 1 Aria (Basso)

O how can I surrender Ephraim?
How can I guard you, Israel?
And should you not be like Admah destroyed forever,
    receive like Zeboim your judgment?
But now my heart is turned within me,
I am compassionate, full of mercy.

    2 Recitativo (Alto)

Yes, surely God could speak a word of condemnation
and let his vengeance treat all foes’ most rude derision.
Yes, countless is the sum of your transgressing
and still great patience God reveals,
but your most hostile spirit is rejecting
    the mercy God is off’ring.
Now when you merciless do deal,
God’s wwrath is kindled by your sinning.

    3 Aria (Alto)

The judgment that will come upon us

  • 1 Aria (Basso)

    2 Recitativo (Alto)

    Ja, freilich sollte Gott
    ein Wort zum Urteil sprechen
    und seines Namens Spott
    an seinen Feinden rächen.
Unzählbar ist die Rechnung deiner Sünden,
und hätte Gott auch gleich Geduld,
    verwirft doch dein feindseliges Gemüte
    die angebotne Güte und drückt den Nächsten um die Schuld;
so muss die Rache sich entzünden.

    3 Aria (Alto)

    Ein unbarmherziges Gerichte
