Mendelssohn’s methods in the composition of Lieder underwent scarcely any changes throughout his lifetime, contrasts between his Lieder depending on the entirely individual shaping of the various pieces. Some of Mendelssohn’s early works are more progressive than his later Lieder. Hans Jörg Mammel, who enjoys an international reputation for his Lieder singing, offers with his selection impressive insights into Mendelssohn’s Lieder. He is accompanied by Arthur Schoonderwoerd, whose piano playing presents an additional impressive element of Mendelssohn’s Lieder.

Arthur Schoonderwoerd
Arthur Schoonderwoerd is one of the most important fortepianists of his generation. His research into unknown and unjustly forgotten repertoire of the 18th and 19th century as well as performance practice has taken him down fascinating roads. Instruments of distinctive sound and touch are his passion, such as the Tangentenflügel, early Viennese pianos, and French pianos of the 19th century. After receiving his soloist’s diploma at the conservatory in Utrecht (Netherlands), he studied with Jos van Immerseel at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he graduated 1995 summa cum laude. He won prizes at the renowned fortepiano competition during the early music festival in Bruges and the Wassenaer competition, and has been conferred the title of Lauréate Juventus by the Council of Europe. In addition to his world-wide solo career, he also is in demand as partner in chamber music and Lieder accompanist. He regularly performs with singers such as Hans Jörg Mammel, Sandrine Piau, David Wilson Johnsen, Mark Padmore and with instrumentalists such as Eric Hoeprich, Jaap ter Linden, Barthold Kuijken, Wilbert Hazelzet, Miklos Spányi, Graf Mourja, François Leleux, Marie Hallynck, Ronald van Spaendonck and others. His recordings have gained praise from the international press. Arthur Schoonderwoerd is teaching the historical piano at the Escola Superior de Música de Barcelona. Personal details
