  • 1. Chorus

    Who has sorrow planting
    reaps then rejoicing greatly.
They that go forth in weeping
and bear the seed for sowing,
    shall come then rejoicing,
    returning with the harvest.
    Psalms 126:5–6

    2. Recitativo (Alto)

    Alone by work and care
    the precious seed can grow
    and yield its full perfection.
Yes, but at first it passes through destruction
before the fervent wish can earn its deep desire.
    The planting must be hard
so that the harvest brings us gladness.
No richer fruitfulness its blessing can afford
thanwhen the seeds are sown in labor and in sadness.
Likewise the spirit brings no harvest to the heart
unless before that joy in sorrow it is sought.

  • Kantate für den Sonntag Jubilate

    1. Chorus Die mit Tränen säen,
    werden mit Freuden ernten.
    Sie gehen hin und weinen
    und tragen edlen Samen
    und kommen mit Freuden
    und bringen ihre Garben.
    Psalm 126,5–6

    2. Recitativo (Alto)

    Bei unverdrossnem Schweiß
    kann edler Samen nur
    die reifen Früchte bringen;
    soll gute Ernte uns erfreuen.

Johann Ludwig Bach – next to Johann Bernhard the most musically accomplished cousin of Johann Sebastian – was born in 1677 at Thal in Thuringia. After attending school at Gotha and further studies he was appointed in 1699 as a musician at the Court of Meiningen, first as a member of the choir and then in 1703 as Court Choirmaster. He was responsible for the church music. Finally in 1711 he became Court Music Director, and he remained in that position for twenty years, until his death in 1731. His relations with his employers were not always harmonius, as is shown by a letter in which Bach complained about overdue payments: “I venture to bring to your highness’s most gracious attention that fact that the losses which I have sustained over ten years, losses which have brought forth

  • The Meiningen Court Kapellmeister Johann Ludwig Bach (1677–1731) belonged to a branch of the family which had split away from the principal Wechmar line during the 16th century. His surviving œuvre is not very extensive. Apart from a collection af 18 cantatas which were preserved by his Leipzig cousin J.S. Bach, there are a few further cantatas and cantata fragments, a Mass, a large-scale piece of funeral music, an orchestral overture (his only extant orchestral work) and some motets for six to ten voices. All his works demonstrate the composer?s solid craftsmanship and inventive gifts. Personal details
