Johann Sebastian Bach Christians, etch this blessed day

Cantata for the 1st day of Christmas BWV 63, 1715

Read and write feedback
With its scoring for a large number of performers, who according to earlier practice were divided into various groups, this Cantata is clearly a festive work. In the richness of its scoring it was equalled, but not surpassed, by Bach's first Leipzig Cantate for the Election of the Town Council, BWV 119, of 1723. It is noticeable that the words of BWV 63 relate to Christmas only in the recitatives, while the choruses and arias express the praise of God in general terms.

  • 1 Chorus Christians, etch this blessed day,
    in rich bronze and glowing marble,
    in warm bronze and glowing marble!
    To the manger run to greet him,
    and there joyfully present him
    with your service and your thanks,
    for the light, of love now breaks,
    grace flows from this lowly stable. 2 Recitativo (Alto) O happy day!
    O most uncommon morning,
    when he who comes to save,
    the Shiloh, whom of old in paradise
    God promised to the human race,
    appears as the great gift that God shall give
    to free his Israel from the imprisonment that now surrounds us
    with which the devil binds us.
    O faithful God,
    what poor things then are we?

  • 1 Chorus Christen, ätztet diesen Tag
    in Metall und Marmorsteine!
    Kommt und eilt mit mir zur Krippen
    und erweist mit frohen Lippen
    euren Dank und eure Pflicht;
    Denn der Strahl, so da einbricht,
    zeigt sich euch zum Gnadenscheine. 2 Recitativo (Alto) O selger Tag! O ungemeines Heute,
    an dem das Heil der Welt,
    der Schilo, den Gott schon im Paradies
    dem menschlichen Geschlecht verhieß,
    nunmehro sich vollkommen dargestellt
    und suchet Israel von der Gefangenschaft
    und Sklavenketten
    des Satans zu erretten.
    Du liebster Gott, was sind wir arme doch?
    Ein abgefallnes Volk, so dich verlassen;
    und dennoch wirst du uns nicht hassen;

    Translation: John Coombs

    The Cantata Christen, ätzet diesen Tag BWV 63 by Johann Sebastian Bach was intended for use on Christmas Day, and was undoubtedly written before he went to Leipzig. The precise details of the composition and first performance of this splendid work are unknown, but according to the result of recent research by Yoshitake Kobayashi a performance of it took place in Weimar on the 25th December 1714. With its scoring for a large number of performers, who according to earlier practice were divided into various groups (4 trumpets and timpani; 3 oboes and bassoons; strings; singers; basso continuo) this Cantata is clearly a festive work. In the richness of its scoring it was equalled, but not surpassed, by Bach’s first Leipzig Cantata for the Election of the Town Council, BWV 119, of 1723. It is noticeable that the words of BWV 63 relate to Christmas only in the recitatives, while the choruses and arias express the praise of God in general terms. It has long been known that these sections of the text also occur in a Cantata used at Halle for the Reformation

  • Gekürztes Vorwort der Ausgabe Carus 31.063

    Ulrich Leisinger

Dezember 1714 in Weimar aufgeführt.
