Luigi Cherubini Messe solennelle in G

Coronation Mass 1819

Read and write feedback
Cherubini's Messe solennelle in G was originally composed for a coronation ceremony planned for 1819. However, the celebrations did not take place, so the mass disappeared into oblivion and was only rediscovered late in the twentieth century. It is performed entirely without soloists. With its rich choral sound, sophisticated instrumental textures and wealth of tonal colors, this work is a high point of Romantic church music.

  • Luigi Carlo Zenobio Salvatore Maria Cherubini (1760–1842) was an Italian composer. His main works include 15 Italian and 14 French operas. After the emergence of Rossini's operas, his works fell out of fashion for a long time, but have recently been rediscovered. Personal details

[...] in diesem Werk zeigt sich Cherubinis Beherrschung der Satztechnik durch selbständige Stimmführung in den Chorstimmen, die am Vorbild Palestrinas orientiert ist.
