Messe solennelle in G
Coronation Mass 1819
Cherubini's Messe solennelle in G was originally composed for a coronation ceremony planned for 1819. However, the celebrations did not take place, so the mass disappeared into oblivion and was only rediscovered late in the twentieth century. It is performed entirely without soloists. With its rich choral sound, sophisticated instrumental textures and wealth of tonal colors, this work is a high point of Romantic church music.
