Salvatore Sacco Missa 1607

Read and write feedback
Only one collection of sacred music from 1607 by the Italian composer Salvatore Sacco, presumably a student by Palestrina, has been handed down to us. The recording presents the majority of these works within a framework of a reconstruction of a liturgy for a Marian feast. The reconstruction is based on a thorough study of liturgical and musical practice of the period which has made it possible to place the surviving works of Sacco into their historical context – during the time when the polyphonic style of the Roman school had attained its zenith. A rewarding encounter with this unjustly forgotten master of vocal polyphony from Roman school in a warm, elegant, sonorous interpretation by the Italian ensemble Templum Musicae under the direction of Vincenzo Di Donato.

[ ] Sacco's setting of 1607 survives in a single printed collection of which three copies have survived. The ordinary movements are interspersed either with beautifully phrased plainsong, or organ music by Quagliati played by Francesco Di Lernia. [ ] The singing on this CD is superb. Templum Musicae is a young ensemble of eight youngish singers (including male altos) sensitively doubled by an instrumental ensemble of renaissance instruments including theorbo, viola da gamba and violone. The clarity of line and ensemble is a joy to hear.

[ ] Before I received this disc, the Italian ensemble Templum Musicae was as unfamiliar to me as the name of Sacco, a situation I'm more than happy to have rectified, since this young group consists of highly accomplished singers who not only blend together excellently, but also have sufficient individuality to emerge from the crowd when appropriate. [ ] This is a valuable addition to the catalog, introducing as it does rare repertoire of a kind still in need of further investigation in performances that do it full justice.
