Mel Bonis
1858
– 1937
Personal details
The support of César Franck helped Mel Bonis, who should have become
a seamstress had she followed her parents‘ wishes, to gain a place at the
Paris Conservatoire. She composed more than 300 works, the majority of
which were printed by renowned publishers during her lifetime. In 1891,
Bonis took part in a competition for the most beautiful waltz composition.
She entered the competition under her gender-neutral alias “M. Bonis”
and won first prize.
