German composer, 1674-1739.
Educated at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, later composer and Kappellmeister in Braunschweig and from 1697 in Hamburg. Keiser wrote almost 70 operas and numerous cantatas there. In 1728 he became cathedral cantor in Hamburg and devoted the rest of his life mainly to church music.
