Wenn ich in deine Augen seh
from: Dichterliebe. For Choir and Pianoforte (Arr. ye-Young Cho)
From sublime ecstasy to the deepest despair, Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe (Poet’s love), based on texts by Heinrich Heine, is a story encompassing all the facets of a true and passionate love. The cycle was written in 1840, the year in which the composer, after a lengthy battle and against fierce resistance, was allowed to wed the virtuoso pianist Clara Wieck. 1840 is also celebrated as the “year of song” in the composer’s oeuvre.
This edition makes this world-famous cycle accessible to choirs while creating an entirely fresh sonic experience. Appearing in their new guise, the familiar melodies still closely reflect Schumann’s musical intentions. Hye-Young Cho is one of South Korea’s leading composers. Here she has produced sensitive arrangements in which the vocal groups are deployed in a varied and well considered manner. Her harmonies strictly follow Schumann’s piano setting (which she adopts unchanged), and thus the arrangements preserve the simple yet intense character of the songs.

Composer
Robert Schumann
| 1810-1856Robert Schumann is still primarily known as a composer of piano and lieder and as a symphonic composer. In his later creative years, however, he saw the composition of choral music as an important focus of his work. Even today, it is important to discover a largely unknown Schumann, whose choral music masterfully combines popular appeal and artistic ambition. Carus offers Schumann's complete works for mixed choir and for female choir a cappella and with piano. They demonstrate his love of experimentation, his sensitivity in the selection and musical realisation of the texts and, last but not least, his independent choral style, which places particular emphasis on refined details in the composition. Songwriter / Librettist
Heinrich Heine
| 1797-1856Heinrich Heine (1797–1856) is regarded as one of the most important German poets of the 19th century. He was born in Düsseldorf and is best known for his lyric poetry, which combines Romanticism with sharp social criticism. Many of his works deal with love, nature and freedom. Because of his political views, Heine lived in exile in Paris for many years.
He also occupies a prominent place in the history of music. His lyrical texts were set to music by numerous composers and had a particularly profound influence on the Romantic art song. Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Hugo Wolf, in particular, created musical works of enduring significance based on Heine’s poems. The poetic combination of linguistic simplicity, emotional depth and often ironic ambiguity offered composers a wide range of possibilities for musical interpretation. As a result, Heine’s poetry became a central part of the Romantic art-song repertoire and continues to influence vocal music to this day.
