  • Hail, Queen of heaven,
    Mother of love and graciousness.
    Life with its sweetness and hope most blessed,
    to you we cry here, we exiles, the sons of Eve’s children;
    to you we do sigh here, with weeping and pleading,
    in this dark and sorrowful valley.
    For you are our helper, the advocate for us;
    with your eyes full of grace look upon us.
    And Jesus, the most blessed fruit of your own body,
    after we end this exile here, make known to us.
    O gracious, O holy, O lovely Virgin Mary.

    ...

    ...

  • Salve Regina,
    mater misericordiae.
    Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
    Ad te clamamus, exsules, filii Evae.
    Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
    in hac lacrimarum valle.
    Eja ergo, Advocata nostra,
    illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.
    Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
    nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
    O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria!

  • ??Abridged text from the CD Carus 83.470

    Felix Loy
    Translation: Erik Dorset

    Felix Mendelssohn wrote his Salve Regina in E flat major in 1823 at the age of fourteen. It can be clearly heard that this work is inspired by the catholic style of Classical era composers from Southern Germany and Austria. Mozart s sacred music was certainly exemplary for Mendelssohn here; Franz Schubert had composed his Salve Regina in A major (D 676) in 1818, merely five years earlier. The smooth, beguilingly beautiful cantilenas at the beginning and end are impressive, as is the interplay of the solo part
