    bello respleñde il cielo,
    la luna è senza velo,
    senza tempesta il mar.

    Vogar, posar sul prato;
    al gondoliere è dato
fra i beni, il ben maggior.

Non cal se brilla il sole
    o mesta appar la luna,
    ognor sulla laguna

    Rudern wir auf flinkem Schiff,
    herrlich erglänzt der Himmel,
    ohne Schleier ist der Mond,
    ohne Sturm das Meer.

Rudern, auf der Wiese ruhen –
    die höchste der Freuden
    ist dem Gondoliere zuerkannt.

    Wenn die Sonne nicht sengt
    oder der Mond traurig scheint:
    Auf der Lagune ist
    der Gondoliere immer König.

Let us row the nimble boat,
    the heavens are shining splendidly,
    the moon is unclouded,
    the sea stormless.

Row, rest by the meadow –
    the greatest joy
    is that of gondoliers.

When the sun does not scorch
    or the moon look sad:
    on the lagoon
    the gondolier is always king.

Additional product information
  • Gioachino Antonio Rossini was an Italian composer who is best known today for his operas. Rossini celebrated his first major successes in Venice in 1813 with the opera seria Tancredi and the opera buffa L'italiana in Algeri. The following years continued this success story. From 1830 onwards, Rossini largely withdrew from public life. Although he still composed many works, including the Stabat mater, he devoted most of his time to eating and enjoying life. During his lifetime, Rossini enjoyed enormous fame throughout Europe, but also, thanks to his apparently humorous and affectionate character, popularity among many of his colleagues.
