Josef Gabriel Rheinberger Sämtliche Klavierwerke (Gesamteinspielung)

Read and write feedback
Josef Gabriel Rheinberger's indisputable importance as a composer of sacred and secular choral music as well as organ music has for the most part obscured the remaining works of his creative output. At the same time there are a great many musical treasures among his piano music for two and four hands just waiting to be discovered. In this 10-CD collection the pianist Jürg Hanselmann presents the complete piano works of Rheinberger which have been assigned opus numbers. For piano four hand works he is aided by his spouse, Sandra Hanselmann-Kästli.

  • During the second half of the 19th century Rheinberger, who was born in 1839 in Vaduz (Liechtenstein), was a major figure of European stature. In demand as a teacher of composition and esteemed as a composer, this professor at the Munich Conservatoire and Bavarian Court Kapellmeister made his mark on a whole generation of musicians. The fact that many of his compositions were no longer performed after his death in 1901, despite their high musical qualities, was largely a result of external circumstances. The change of aesthetic orientation which began about the turn of the century led to a radical move away from the conservative-classical ideals to which Rheinberger – like Brahms – had felt himself committed. It was also a fact that Rheinberger never publicized his own works vigorously. The Josef-Rheinberger-Archiv and Carus published a complete edition of works by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger for the first time. The edition, concluded in 2009, has contributed significantly to the fact that the music of this composition teacher and Bavarian Court Kapellmeister from Munich can once again be heard around the world today. • Jürg Hanselmann’s involvement with music stretches back to his childhood. He received his soloist’s diploma at the Bern Music Conservatory in 1980 with distinction. Further studies on the piano took him to Louis Kentner in London and Irina Edelstein in Frankfurt. He also attended chamber music master classes with the Beaux Arts Trio and piano master classes with Mieczieslaw Horszowski. In 1983 Hanselmann studied composition and analysis with Sándor Veress, who had been a composition pupil of Kodály and a piano student of Bartók. Both had studied with Hans (Janos) Koessler, the Liechtenstein student of Rheinberger, forming a nice biographical link for Hanselmann with the best-known Liechtenstein composer Josef Rheinberger. The list of Jürg Hanselmann’s own compositions to date includes piano, orchestral, choral and chamber music and lieder. As a pianist, he is winner of the Eduard Tschumi Prize Bern 1980, the prize of the Anniversary Foundation of the Swiss Volksbank 1980, the Migros Competition Zurich 1983, Rotary Prize of Liechtenstein 1987, the Cultural Prize of the International Lake Constance Conference 1991 Munich and the Josef Gabriel Rheinberger Prize Vaduz 2005. Concert appearances have taken him throughout Europe and to the USA. With his wife Sandra he also performs as a piano duo. His numerous CD productions include the present internationally-acclaimed complete recording of the piano works of Josef Rheinberger on eleven CDs, and the CD Die Eisenbahn in der Klaviermusik. She later studied at the Vocational School there with Albert Schneeberger and her future husband Jürg Hanselmann. She completed her studies in Bern in 1985 with a teaching diploma. Further studies took the pianist to Irina Edelstein in Frankfurt, and to Zurich, where she studied with Verena Pfenninger at the Music Conservatory, taking her concert diploma. Sandra Hanselmann was a prizewinner of the Kiefer-Hablitzel Foundation Bern and the Migros Competition Zurich in 1987. With her husband she performs in a piano duo which has made several CD recordings, including works by Brahms, Rheinberger, Honegger and her husband. Personal details

Reviews

Hanselmann is the perfect musician for this, for all what I wrote I hear in his interpretation and more. ... The sound is perfect.
Harry van der Wal, Harry's classical music corner, 28.09.2017

… Every disc in this set has some attractive music on it and amongst the collected toccatas, fugues, etudes and characteristic pieces there are some real gems, pieces you will return to again and again. … Hanselmann’s playing is model of refined sensability, he lets the music do the talking. … The recorded sound is good, it is sympathetic to the music rather than sparkling and bright, which combined with an excellent booklet essay, only adds to the enjoyment of this unjustly neglected music. … Carus should be applauded for bringing this recording to a wider public and for all their recordings of the music of Rheinberger, let us hope that the coming years will see them produce even more CDs of his music so that he may achieve the recognition that he deserves!
(Stuart Sillitoe, Preston Recorded Music Society, December 2011)

… With a consistently rich and detailed piano sound in the recordings and superb playing throughout, this set is a feast for the piano buff and collector of romantic repertoire.
(Bernhard Morbach, rbb kulturradio, 06. Oktober 2011)
