Personal details

Attended school first in Görlitz and then at the Kreuzschule in Dresden, where he was a pupil of G. A. Homilius. 1751 studied in Leipzig, 1754 tutor to Count Heinrich von Brühl. Back in Leipzig in 1758, Hiller was active as a concert organiser, conductor, singing teacher and music publicist; he was the first director of the concerts held in the Gewandhaus from 1781. 1789 Thomas Cantor in succession to Johann Friedrich Doles.
