The tenor Markus Schäfer studied singing and church music in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf and attended the Opera Studio in Zurich, where he made his debut at the Opera House. This launched him on international opera and concert career in which he has become one of the most sought-after Mozart tenors and has sung a wide-ranging oratorio and Lieder repertoire at leading festivals. His numerous performances and recordings with conductors such as Harnoncourt, Jacobs, Leonhardt, Nagano, Luisi, Herreweghe etc. have received international acclaim (a Grammy award for the St. Matthew Passion on the Teldec label). With Hartmut Höll (piano) he has given several world premieres (Rihm) and appeared in concerts as far afield as New York. In 2008 he was appointed Professor of Singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover.
