  • Memories The trees are green everywhere,
    the flowers are blooming again,
    and the nightingale now sings
    her old songs again.
Oh fortunate he who sings and laughs,
that spring has also remembered him.

    Everything that lay and slumbered
    now awakens to new life,
and every flower in every grove
    will grow towards the sun.
What use are flower and birdsong to me,
I miss you, miss you everywhere.

Oh Dear Heart, and will I now
    never see you again?
Then for me, too, spring must pass
    without flowers or songs.
What use is spring to me,

    ...

  • Andenken Die Bäume grünen überall,
    die Blumen blühen wieder,
    und wieder singt die Nachtigall
    nun ihre alten Lieder.
O glücklich, wer noch singt und lacht,
dass auch der Frühling sein gedacht.

Wohl alles, was im Schlummer lag,
    erwacht zu neuem Leben,
und jede Blüt an jedem Hag
    darf sich zur Sonne heben.
Was soll mir Blüt und Vogelschall,
du fehlst mir, fehlst mir überall.

O liebes Herz, und soll ich dich
    nun niemals wiedersehen?
So muss der Frühling auch für mich
    ohn Blüt und Sang vergehen.
Was soll der Frühling doch für mich,

    ...

  • Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) is regarded as one of the most important composers of the Romantic period. His compositions combine the formal clarity of the Viennese Classical period with the heightened expressiveness of the 19th century. His engagement with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach was particularly influential; he played a key role in its rediscovery through the performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1829.

Among his best-known vocal works are his two oratorios, Paulus and Elias, as well as his chorale cantata Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich. Furthermore, Mendelssohn worked as a conductor, pianist and music teacher, and made a significant contribution to the professionalisation of the concert scene and to the development of the Leipzig Conservatoire. His work occupies a central position in 19th-century music history and combines a sense of tradition with Romantic sound aesthetics.
