and trilling morning choirs:
I feel sick at heart when I hear it from below.
For an hour I merely slip out
in your merry summer home,
and must therefore complain:
you always live in the lap of luxury,
watching it grow dark and light here.
You seek the trees’ green ceiling,
the thaw of the meadow, the pebbled stream,
you flee from the city and wall,
and let people sigh “oh!” in their birdcage.

und trillert Morgenchöre:
Ich fühle mich im Herzen krank,
wenn ich’s von unten höre.
Ein Stündchen schleich ich bloß heraus
in euer lustig Sommerhaus,
und muss mich dess’ beklagen:
Ihr lebet stets in Saus und Braus,
seht’s nachten hier und tagen.
Ihr sucht der Bäume grünes Dach,
der Wiese Schmelz, den Kieselbach,
ihr flieht vor Stadt und Mauer,
und lasst die Menschen seufzen,
ach! in ihrem Vogelbauer.
