At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach’s church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Additional product information
  • Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782), the youngest son of the Thomaskantor, developed his personal style principally during a long stay in Italy (1755–1762) – a period which saw a break with the musical world of his father and his elder brothers. His easily accessible and melodious compositions, which were to have a lasting influence on the young Mozart, are characterized by the noble elegance and cantabile qualities of Italian opera aria. Beside numerous stage works, most of which date from his years in London (1762–1782), J.C. Bach also wrote sacred vocal works, and instrumental music for almost all the ensembles commonly used in this time. Personal details
  • The publisher, church musician and teacher Günter Graulich is one of the major personalities in German publishing of the post-war period. With his wife Waltraud he founded Carus-Verlag Stuttgart in 1972, which he built up from a 2-person family firm to a medium-sized business with around 60 employees. A trained church musician and Kantor for many years at the Matthäuskirche Stuttgart, he also directed the Motettenchor Stuttgart for 50 years. With his choir he made LP and CD recordings, and undertook numerous concert tours to other European countries and America. Personal details
