Johann Sebastian Bach All those who seek God’s sov’reign guidance

Cantata for the 5th Sunday after Trinity BWV 93, 1724

For this choral cantata, Bach used the first, fourth, and seventh verses of the chorale of the same name by Georg Neumark. The other verses, however, have been mixed with free adaptations.

  • 1 Chorus

All those who seek God’s sov’reign guidance
    and hope in him forevermore,
    he blesses with divine abundance,
in toil and cross they will endure.
All those who trust in God alone,
have never built on sand but stone.

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

What help to us are grief and worry?
They pressure heart and mind with utter pain
    and burdens of all kind.
What help to us is ev’ry groan
that brings us only grief unknown?
What help if ev’ry morn we tarry,
arise from sleep in great distress,
and being covered with our tears,
we go at night to rest?
We make the journey’s cross and pain
grow heavy with our troubled sadness.
So Christians do much better to bear their

  • 1 Chorus

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten
    und hoffet auf ihn allezeit,
    den wird er wunderlich erhalten
    in allem Kreuz und Traurigkeit.
    wer Gott, dem Allerhöchsten, traut,
der hat auf keinen Sand gebaut.

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

Was helfen uns die schweren Sorgen?
    Sie drücken nur das Herz
mit Zentnerpein, mit tausend Angst und Schmerz.
Was hilft uns unser Weh und Ach?

  • Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most important composers of Western music history. He came from a widely ramified musical dynasty, which produced numerous musicians and organists in the Thuringian-Saxon area.

    Bach vocal

Ever since Carus-Verlag was founded in 1972, publishing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been a special focus for us. In the 2017 Reformation anniversary year we completed the Bach vocal project. Bach's complete sacred vocal works are now available in modern Urtext editions, together with performance material. A complete edition of all the full scores is also available in a high quality box set. Personal details
Personal details

When creating this edition, the decision was made to notate movements 1, 4 and 7 in C minor (3b) instead of C Dorian (2b). The figuring was adjusted accordingly.

Unfortunately, there is no critical report (!) in which this can be read, nor does the preface provide any clarification.

There is also a suspended basso continuo, which makes the writing very confusing, especially in the recitatives.

None of this does justice to the label "Urtext edition".

I was kind enough to receive a quick reply to my enquiry. Unfortunately, a revision of this older edition is not to be expected in the near future, as there are more "urgent cases" to be dealt with first and the musical text itself has been well researched.

At the recent performance, I also noticed that the recitatives are very poorly represented in the vocal extracts. The cellist only sees the vocal part in the secco sections, but not in the accompagnato - so it is difficult for him to be together with the soloist and he also tends to slip in the line.

Answered from Carus-Verlag:
This edition belongs to the Bach editions published by Hänssler-Verlag, which were taken over by Carus at the beginning of the 1990s. The musical text of the edition was carefully compiled by Reinhold Kubik and is still valid today. The re-notation to C minor was typical of the time and does not represent an intervention in the music. Before the (provisional) completion of our Bach project in 2017, we also looked through all the old editions again, revised minor details here and there and added prefaces to bring them up to date, but only completely redid the editions where really wrong editorial decisions had been made or new sources had emerged. Neither of these is the case with BWV 93. Over the next few years, we intend to revise other older Bach editions. Thank you for your understanding!
