Peter Thalheimer
| 1946Peter Thalheimer studied recorder, flute (with Prof. Hartmut Strebel) and school music in Stuttgart. He completed his musicological studies with a doctorate at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität of Tübingen. He has taught in Nuremberg since 1978, and is currently professor of historical performance practice and recorder/transverse flute at the Hochschule für Musik Nuremberg. Concerts, radio and recording productions, courses and lectures he has given have taken him throughout Europe and the USA. In addition, his work has resulted in numerous music editions, as well as publications on performance practice, the study of instruments and on woodwind technique. Torri’s ”Son rosignolo” and Vivaldi’s ”Cara sorte” both demand ”Flagiolet” or Flautino, the French Flageolet, but the parts can be performed on sopranino recorder without any problem. Many written-out trills enhance the song of Torri’s ”nightingale” whereas leaps and arpeggios are used in Vivaldi’s ”Cara sorte” (RV 739). In Keiser’s ”Philomene” the recorder part illustrates the furioso mood of the text – the part is notated in demi-semi quavers and the written-out arpeggios are even faster.
Thalheimer has made an excellent job of this compilation which should inspire recorder players to branch out into largely unknown repertoire. Great care has been taken with the research. All the sources are listed, the editorial is in English and German. Full marks for these excellent editions.
