Missa romana
The "Missa romana" is a mass setting in Latin. With a duration of c. 10 minutes, and a moderate level of difficulty, it is intended for performance in Catholic services. It combines jazzy chords and Latin American rhythms with quotations from the Gregorian "Missa de Angelis", which is currently used in many parishes and is popular to sing.
The aim is to portray the Latin American dance rhythms authentically and with infectious energy for the listening congregation. This can certainly be achieved through a performance with at leaset a percussion group which is able to exploit the variety of Latin American percussion instruments. The band could also include a double bass and, as harmony instrument, guitar and/or keyboard. The dance rhythms given serve as a guide to rhythm and tempo, and the chordal accompaniment should be improvised using the chord symbols.
As performance with band won’t always be possible, the "Missa romana" is written so that it can also be performed a cappella or with organ accompaniment.

| 1979Thomas Schäfer wurde 1979 in Schwäbisch Gmünd geboren. Nach dem Studium der Schul- und Kirchenmusik in Stuttgart mit den Hauptfächern Orgel (Prof. Jon Laukvik), Orgelimprovisation (Prof. Bernhard Haas) und Klavier (Toshiko Yasuda-Brommer) sowie dem Leistungsfach Dirigieren (Chorleitung: Prof. Dieter Kurz, Orchesterleitung: Prof. Helmut Wolf) absolvierte er sein Kapellmeisterstudium bei Prof. Bruno Weil in München und schloss 2008 mit dem Meisterklassendiplom Orchesterdirigieren ab.
Er leitete zahlreiche Orchester, darunter die Münchner Symphoniker, assistierte bei verschiedenen Bühnenproduktionen u. a. am Staatstheater Nürnberg, arbeitet als Organist, Klavierbegleiter und Chorleiter und war von 2006 bis 2008 Chefdirigent und künstlerischer Leiter des Münchner Kammerorchesters Philludiker, mit dem er mehrere Uraufführungen realisierte. Von der Spielzeit 2007/2008 bis 2011 war Thomas M. J. Schäfer bei mehreren Uraufführungen und Einstudierungen musikalischer Assistent der Staatsoper Stuttgart und zeichnete als Chordirektor der Jungen Oper für diverse Choreinstudierungen verantwortlich. Seit 2008 ist er hauptverantwortlicher Kirchenmusiker an St. Josef Böbingen, wo er neben dem Kirchenchor die Gregorianik-Schola leitet und das Kammerorchester Sinfonietta St. Josef ins Leben gerufen hat, sowie Dirigent des Gesangvereins Liederkranz 1877 e. V. Grafenberg. Mit seinen Chören hat Thomas M. J. Schäfer zahlreiche seiner Kompositionen und Arrangements uraufgeführt. Die Missa romana ist seine erste Messkomposition. Er bekleidet seit 2013 einen Lehrauftrag für Musik und Italienisch am Baden-Württembergischen Landesgymnasium für Hochbegabte, wo er auch zwei Chöre leitet und ein Schulorchester neu aufgebaut hat. Thomas M. J. Schäfer erhielt für sein Klarinettenkonzert Impressionen – Konzertante Fantasie für Klarinette und Orchester 2001 den 2. Preis beim Kompositionswettbewerb zum Bundesmusikfest und ist seit 2003 als freier Autor und Komponist für die Hörfunkwelle BR Klassik des Bayerischen Rundfunks tätig, wo er u. a. Ein sehr originelles Stück, das sich bestens für junge Chöre und junggebliebene Kirchenchöre eignet, die Spass an farbiger Harmonik und lateinamerikanischen und jazzigen Rhythmen haben.
