Johann Sebastian Bach Sobs and sighing, tears and crying

Cantata for the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany BWV 13, 1726

Read and write feedback
Bach’s cantata BWV 13 (from the third cycle of Leipzig cantatas) was first performed on the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in 1726. This work is marked especially by its scoring, unusual in Bach’s church music, in which the strings are joined by two recorders and an oboe da caccia: these wind instruments are used to convey the dominant affections of “sighing” and “pain” in the individual arias. In accordance with the intimate character of this cantata the four-part vocal ensemble is used only in the chorale at the end of the work.

  • 1 Aria (Tenore)

    Sobs and sighing,
    tears and crying,
woes and cares I count in vain.
    Grief my ev’ry hour attending
    melancholy never ending,
    Ah! methinks this bitter pain
soul from body soon is rending.

    2 Recitativo (Alto)

Ah dearest God, Thou lettest me in vain be calling,
as death to me is nearing
    no comfort is appearing.
The hour comes apace when I must go to meet Thee,
alone, o must I still in vain entreat Thee?

    3 Choral

Thou, O God, hast surely promised
help to send in my distress,
    ever ready never failing
    comfort in my bitterness.
    Canst Thou, then, forever be

  • 1 Aria (Tnore)

    Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen
    können nicht zu zählen sein.
    Wenn sich täglich Wehmut findet
    und der Jammer nicht verschwindet,
ach! so muss uns diese Pein
schon den Weg zum Tode bahnen.

    2 Recitativo (Alto)

Mein liebster Gott lässt mich annoch vergebens rufen

    3 Choral (Alto)

Der Gott, der mir hat versprochen
    seinen Beistand jederzeit,
    der lässt sich vergebens suchen
    itzt in meiner Traurigkeit.
Ach! will er denn für und für
    grausam zürnen über mir,

The cantata Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen, BWV 13, was written for the second Sunday after Epiphany, and was first performed on 20 January 1726. It belongs to Bach’s third Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas in which, unlike the preceding cycle of so-called „chorale cantatas“, there is no recognizable cyclical interrelationship based on a common, overriding principle.

The cantata BWV 13 is especially distinguished by its unusual scoring with the strings joined by three woodwind instruments, which are used differently in the individual movements, and employed in a particular manner to bring out the meaning of the words. The text (like those of seven other cantatas of this annual cycle) is from the Darmstadt cantata cycle of 1711 by Georg Christian Lehms. In the printed edition of the collection of texts it is assigned to the Nachmittags-Andachten, whose combination of madrigalesque arias and rhymed recitatives in these cantata texts indicate that they were intended primarily for an ensemble of soloists. Thus the cantata Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen, which treats the basic theme of the Gospel for the day “My hour is not yet come” (St.
