Settings of the Seven Words

The "Seven Last Words" are a compilation of Jesus' words on the cross from the four Gospels. The number seven also has a symbolic meaning for the seven days of the week, but also for the seven deadly sins. The song by the Esslingen theologian Johann Böschenstein "Da Jesu an dem Kreuze stund" already compiled the seven words in lyrical form in the 16th century. It forms the framework for Heinrich Schütz's setting of "Die sieben Worte Christi am Kreuz," the first independent setting of the seven words.
