Missa Sancti Henrici

The Missa Sancti Henrici is a work of Biber’s later years. It is one of his largest and most mature pieces of church music. With the skillful alternation of the “stile antico” and the “stile moderno,” as well as the contrast between Solo and Tutti, Biber attained a structure within the individual movements rich in variety. In its original architectural conception, Salzburg Cathedral had four galleries, each with its own organ, on the piers supporting the dome at the crossing. This conception created the spatial prerequisite for double- and polychoral performance tradition on the Venetian model. Biber’s magnificent sacred music brought this tradition to a point of culmination in a „colossal style“ that was unique in transalpine Europe.

| 1966-2015Armin Kircher studied church music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Until his death he was Director of the Church Music Department of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, and since 1992 he had been administrative director of the Österreichische Werkwoche für Kirchenmusik (Austrian Week for Church Music). He was also Director of Music at St Peter's Abbey, Salzburg and organist at the Cajetan Church in Salzburg. The collections he edited for the Catholic liturgy have become established standard works, in particular the choral collections Chorbuch Mozart • Haydn, the Chorbuch Kirchenjahr (Choirbook for the Church Year) and publications for organ and choir for the new Catholic hymnbook Gotteslob. Die verdienstvolle Reihe der Salzburger Kirchenmusik mit Werken von Michael Haydn, Biber, Bonamico, Eberlin usw., welche von Armin Kircher betreut wird, wird mit Bibers „Missa Sancti Henrici” fortgesetzt, einem Werk, in dem großflächige, meist homophon gehaltene, klangprächtige Tuttipartien (mit klanglicher Gegenüberstellung des Chors und des Trompetenchors in Doppelchormanier) mit polyphonen Solis kontrastieren.
