What's the best way of motivating choir singers? An attractive musical program certainly helps! As you return to your normal choral activities, more familiar works are easier and more enjoyable to rehearse and stage than completely new repertoire.

Below is a selection of the most important works from the choral literature that every choir wants to sing at least once! Use it to inspire your concert program planning. We offer many of these works in versions with reduced scoring – an attractive alternative that doesn't break the budget!

  • J. S. Bach: St Matthew Passion / St. John Passion / Christmas Oratorio

It was the Passions (Matthäus-Passion BWV 244.2, Johannespassion BWV 245)  in particular which earned Bach the honorary title of a fifth Evangelist at the beginning of the 20th century.

A wide range of our practice aids (the choir app carus music and Choir Coach) offer support when practising these demanding masterpieces, works which are a highlight for every choral singer.

  • Beethoven: Mass in C major

The first of Beethoven’s two Mass settings opens up entirely new expressive worlds in its setting of the liturgical text which are expressly modern and point towards the future.

  • Brahms: German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem)

The chorus stands at the heart of Brahms’s universal commemoration of the dead. Smaller choirs and choirs with limited resources of space or finance can also perform this popular work in the chamber version.

  • Dvorák: Mass in D major

The lyrical-meditative Mass can also be performed in an arrangement for wind quintet.

  • Fauré: Cantique de Jean Racine

This expressive choral setting is one of Fauré’s most popular works: it can be performed in versions for organ, strings, or orchestra (all original).

  • Gounod: Messe brève no. 7 aux chapelles

Scored for small forces, and easy for the chorus to rehearse. A melodious work suitable for many occasions.

  • Händel: Messiah

Messiah is one of the most frequently-performed works in the world. Carus offers two single-language vocal scores (in English, and in German) for ease of legibility. Our practice aids (choir app and Carus Choir Coach) offer optimal support for choral singers in rehearsing.

  • Haydn: Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo

The “Little Organ Mass” is still one of the most popular works of its type, and in its modest demands can easily be tackled by many choirs.

  • Haydn: The Creation

This oratorio, popular worldwide, marks the birth of the great German oratorio. It can also be performed in a version with reduced wind and brass forces. The material is also available to create a children’s concert.

  • J. M. Haydn: Requiem in C minor

Known as the “Schrattenbach Requiem”, sections were performed at the composer’s own Requiem Mass and that of his brother Joseph Haydn. The work had a great influence on Mozart’s own composition.

  • Mendelssohn: Psalm 42 (Wie der Hirsch schreit)

Soon after its completion, Schumann described this work as the "highest level that he \[Mendelssohn] has achieved as a composer of church music, indeed the highest level that modern church music has ever reached". If the symphonic scoring of 15 wind instruments is too large or too expensive for your choir, the reduced chamber version with just five winds offers an alternative.

  • Mendelssohn: Elijah (Elias)

Characterized by gripping drama and lyrical intimacy in equal measure, a work which every choir wants to sing once. Discover also the chamber version of the oratorio (arr. J. Linckelmann)!

  • Mendelssohn: Hear my prayer (Hör mein Bitten)

Mendelssohn orchestrated his famous hymn, in fact an English anthem, in masterly fashion shortly before his death. So choirs have the option of choosing between the orchestral or organ accompaniment.

  • Mendelssohn: In thy mercy grant us peace (Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich)

Robert Schumann wrote: "This short piece deserves to be famous the world over and it will achieve this in the future." As well as the orchestral version an organ arrangement is available.

  • Miškinis: Cantate Domino

This three-minute long unaccompanied piece for six voices is our bestselling contemporary choral work.

  • Mozart: Mass in C

Known as the "Coronation Mass" for no reason, it can be effectively practised with the help of our choir app carus music.

  • Mozart: Requiem

Surrounded by legends and anecdotes, alongside the familiar version by Süßmayr we recommend the version by Robert Levin.

  • Mozart: C Minor Mass

The version completed by Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf aims to make a performance possible whilst maintaining the greatest respect for the extant material, and without obscuring Mozart’s musical manuscript with their own contributions. Within just a few years, also thanks to Frieder Bernius’s recording, it has been taken up by musicians worldwide.

  • Puccini: Messa di Gloria

This composition, known as the "Messa di Gloria", is published as the first volume in the "Edizione Nazionale" of Puccini’s works. An arrangement for chamber orchestra offers more choirs the opportunity of performing this work, which is popular throughout the world.

  • Rheinberger: Stabat Mater in G minor

This impressive 14-minute work captivates through its cantabile qualities. Two "compatible" versions enable performances in small and larger venues.

  • Rossini: Petite Messe solennelle

The reduced instrumental accompaniment of this full-length work with two pianos and harmonium produces the unmistakable timbre of this Rossinian masterpiece.

  • Rossini: Stabat Mater

A high point of the genre – and thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra, something which many choirs can tackle.

  • Saint-Saëns: Oratorio de Noël

This attractive, lyrical Christmas oratorio by Saint-Saëns can also be performed with just organ.

  • Schubert: Mass in E flat major

Although the Mass was described by some contemporaries as "unsuitable for liturgical use" because it omits some essential passages of text, it has lost none of its popularity with choirs.

  • Schubert: Mass in G major

One of the most popular settings of the Mass ordinary: we recommend the "Klosterneuburg version", scored for string accompaniment, and ad lib trumpets and timpani (as an Urtext version reflecting Schubert’s own intended scoring). Also available in the "Choir & Organ" series.

  • Verdi: Messa da Requiem

The Carus edition of this dramatic masterpiece, full of extremes, is the first critical edition with the complete performance material available to purchase. Also available in a two very exciting, brilliant sounding arrangements (1. with horn, double bass, marimba, timpani, and piano, 2. with chamber orchestra).

  • Vivaldi: Gloria in D major

The Carus edition, the publisher’s very first music edition, helped considerably to make this musically impressive and varied work into one of today’s most popular Vivaldi choral works.

  • Vivaldi: Magnificat

A feature of this short, easy-to-perform work is the "Deposuit potentes" where the choral writing is in unison.
