Masses by Johann Michael Haydn
Haydn’s extensive output of church music, highly regarded by no less than his brother Joseph and the Mozarts father and son, towers above his other works and underpinned a new direction for church music in the 19th century. Gradually, Carus has published over 30 masses by Johann Michael Haydn. Amongst these, his most famous work the Deutsche Messe (German Mass) "Hier liegt vor deiner Majestät" (Here before Thy Majesty) is certainly worth singling out, as well as a series of works scored for three upper voices. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart later took Haydn’s Requiem in C minor of 1771 as the model for his own Requiem in D minor, a work which remained unfinished, like Haydn’s own last work the Requiem in B flat major.
