Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina had a decisive influence on the development of church music. His masses, motets and madrigals are masterpieces of vocal polyphony. The Missa Papae Marcelli is one of Palestrina's most famous works. It is not only the myth created in the early 17th century about the salvation of polyphonic church music from the judgment of the Council of Trent that makes a performance of the mass so appealing. Even apart from the myth and reception, the mass captivates with its artful combination of multi-layered polyphony and text comprehensibility.
