Unlike the well-known settings of the "Seven Last Words" by Schütz or Haydn, in his opulently scored composition Franck provides commentary to the words of Jesus with excerpts from the Old and New Testaments as well as from portions of the "Stabat Mater". In his transposition of the Latin text into music Franck reveals a rich palette of compositional parameters: “different-sized ensembles, exciting orchestration, formal variety and sophisticated harmony. Laments, simple passages for the choir in unison, passages with great drama, melodic shapes filled with sweetness convey to the listener a multi-layered impression of a composition stamped by a strongly personal will to expression.“ Württembergische Blätter für Kirchenmusik 1/1991

Der Vater erkannte früh seine Begabung und gab ihn 1831 zur musikalischen Ausbildung an das Konservatorium Lüttich in Belgien. Vier Jahre später zog die Familie nach Paris, wo der fünfzehnjährige César ebenfalls am Konservatorium aufgenommen wurde und in die Klavierklasse Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmermanns kam. Auch besuchte er die Klassen in Kontrapunkt bei Aimé Ambroise Simon Leborne, Komposition bei Henri-Montan Berton und Orgel bei François Benoist. In dieser Zeit entstanden seine ersten kammermusikalischen Werke, wie die 3 trios concertants für Violine, Violoncello und Klavier. 1858 wurde er Titularorganist in der Ste. Clotilde-Kirche in Paris, für welche er ein eigenes Repertoire komponierte. Darunter befindet sich u.a. das Oratorium über Die Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreuz 1859, welches beim Carus-Verlag erhältlich ist.

Im ausführlichen und sehr informativen Vorwort des Herausgebers Wolfgang Hochstein erfährt der interessierte Musiker und Dirigent viele wichtige Details über Cesar Francks bis heute völlig unbekanntes Werk. Als 37jähriger schrieb Franck das Werk ... Zur musikalischen Gestaltung: Es überwiegen langsame Tempi, B- und Molltonarten. Innerhalb dieses Rahmens strebt Franck nach größtmöglicher musikalischer Vielfalt und Abwechslung: unterschiedliche Besetzungen, reizvolle Instrumentationen, formale Abwechslung und differenzierte Harmonik. Klagegesänge, schlichte Choraliter-Passagen, Abschnitte größter Dramatik, melodische Gestaltungen voller Süße vermitteln dem Hörer einen vielschichtigen Eindruck einer von starkem persönlichem Ausdruckswillen geprägten Komposition, die ihn unmittelbar anspricht. Insgesamt eine Schatzhebung aus dem Bereich der romantischen Oratoriums- bzw. Kantatenliteratur, die weite Verbreitung verdient, obwohl sie durch die große Orchesterbesetzung nicht ganz unaufwendig zu realisieren ist.
